"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

How quickly the world changes in a blink of an eye. Last week when I sent the notice out about the picnic I was not planning to send another letter until after the Labor Day Holiday.

Nature in it’s intense fury has changed all of my best laid plans. I am proud that I have been asked by so many of you as to what the church is going to do for the Hurricane Harvey victims. I’m glad that you are thinking of others quickly and asking what as a church we can do.

Enclosed in this letter is an envelope that is labeled Hurricane Harvey Relief. I hope that each of you will prayerfully consider your contribution and we will take these up this coming Sunday and if you need to you may drop yours off at the office on Monday or Tuesday.   You may also give online through this website by clicking on the red "Donate to Hurricane Harvey Relief Through Cahaba Heights UMC" button, and entering the amount you wish to donate in the "Hurricane Harvey Relief" column.

We plan to then do as we have done in the past find a church that is in desperate need and partner with them and help in any way possible. This is an extremely personal cause to mother and me. It was thirteen years ago when a hurricane came ashore in Pensacola we lost our family home. It was a house that had withstood the test of time and in one catastrophic event was flooded with 37 inches of water. Mother and I understand to some degree the feeling of desperation. We like many Houstonians were in our home when the water began to rise.

It is truly a faith finding event when you wonder how high the water is going to get when you have nowhere to go and you are cut off from any type of emergency help. I know how thankful I am for the kindness that complete strangers showed during this time. It was through the compassion of others that we were able to recover.

I had thought my next letter would be to ask for donations to help with the new air conditioners. God has a plan. We can wait on air conditioners and help those that have lost everything. God is good and I am certain his church will rise up as we have done in the past to surprise even ourselves with the help we do for others.

Thank you for being a congregation that cares. You are the best!!

See you Sunday!
