For it is by by grace you have been been saved through faith; and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God: not by works, so no one can boast.

Welcome Visitors
Welcome to Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church’s website. Here information can be found about the various ministries and programs that make this congregation unique. While there are many factors for people to consider when looking for a spiritual home, none is more important than acceptance. Frequently, I hear people say that this is one of the friendliest congregations they have ever visited. Cahaba Heights UMC is not just a place to visit; it is a vibrant community for persons looking for a spiritual home.
We offer Sunday School and a Sunday Morning service, with the main focus on traditional worship. Cahaba Heights UMC offers outstanding music, spirited singing, and relevant preaching. Additionally, we have programs for children and youth. The programs for these age groups are directed by paid staff members who are committed to excellence.
What to Expect
At Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church the emphasis is on the experience of worshiping Jesus Christ rather than on manner of dress. There is no "Dress Code" here and although the the Sunday Morning Service is based on traditional Methodist liturgy, the atmosphere is quite relaxed. Some worshippers dress in traditional "Sunday Best", others dress more casually. Modern "Business Casual" is quite appropriate. Ladies are welcome and comfortable in slacks and pants. Many attend even more casually dressed. We ask only that worshippers dress appropriately and in good taste.

Our Congregation
At Cahaba Heights UMC we are a multi-generational congregation with a mix of children, youth, young adults, middle aged adults, and seniors. We are often a multi-racial and multi-ethnic congregation. Some of our members have deep roots in the community representing some of the oldest names in the area, others of us are new or relatively new to the area. We have many professionals, doctors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, etc., who worship with us, along with white collar and blue collar workers. There are currently many retired persons who worship with us.
We'll do our best to make your visit to worship with us a meaningful and pleasant experience.
We will do our best to help you not feel "out of place”, and we will do our best to make you feel welcome.
We hope you will soon become a member helping us to welcome others.
Our Church History
In the summer of 1879, the first organized congregation of Methodist Protestant met in the village of Merkel for worship. The name chosen for this church was New Hope and it was the beginning of our church family. As the community grew, the need for a larger building was met with a two story structure that was used for the church, a community public school and a lodge hall. Unfortunately. this building was destroyed by fire in 1904. Four years later, in 1908, a new structure was built on our present location with a parsonage added in 1909. Several annual conferences were held at New Merkel during the years of 1910 - 1934.
Another disastrous fire occurred in 1928 which destroyed the parsonage and most of the church records. Immediately the parsonage was rebuilt and the congregation continued to grow. In 1939, the United Methodist Church, a unified body, was formed from three branches of Methodism.
Our name was changed from New Merkel to Cahaba Heights in 1955. In May, 1959, the first worship service was held in the newly constructed sanctuary, much of which was built by members of our congregation. Our Centennial Celebration was held in September, 1979. In 1990, the sanctuary was totally remodeled into the present sanctuary.
